Yakutsk Pre-Tour

In the early morning, you arrive in Yakutsk, where you are welcomed and escorted to your centrally located hotel while your luggage is taken to the MS Mikhail Svetlov. After breakfast you tour the city and visit the fascinating Mammoth Museum and the Melnikov Permafrost Institute. At a welcome dinner at your hotel in the evening, your tour guides introduce themselves and your trip gets off to a swinging start with a performance by a group of Yakutian artists. (BLD)

With the Yakutsk pre-tour, guests visit the Treasury of the Sakha Republic and the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography before boarding your river vessel on the day of the cruise. All entrance fees are included.

Day 1. Welcome to Yakutia!

Upon your arrival in Yakutsk, your transfer to the river port, where you board the MS Mikhail Svetlov. and settle into your cabin. In the evening, you cast off and begin your trip, heading south and upstream toward the Lena Pillars. Overnight on board (D)

Day 2. Lena Pillars

In the morning, you reach the Lena Pillars National Park, where impressive columns of rock as high as 200 meters tower over a 40-kilometer stretch of the river. You take part in a shamanic welcome ceremony with ritual dances and traditional purification rites. Your ship sets course again northward, and you now head downstream. Overnight on board (BLD)

Day 3. Buotama Riverscape

Today you reach the central Yakutia plateau, where you visit Lenskie Stolby Nature Park, where scores of wood bison have been relocated from Canada’s Elk Island National Park. Here the riverbed branches out in all directions, and is sometimes as deep as 20 meters. From the deck of your ship, you have a wonderful view of the Verkhoyansk Mountains. You enjoy the day on board and listen to talks about the history of Yakutia and related topics. Overnight on board (BLD)

Day 4. Mouth of the Vilyuy River

Today you reach the mouth of the Vilyuy River, the longest tributary of the Lena. Today you enjoy the day on board with entertaining lectures. Overnight on board (BLD)

Day 5. Zhigansk and the Arctic Circle

Today you enter the Arctic Circle. You visit Zhigansk, the first settlement you encounter within the Arctic Circle. The town is inhabited by approximately 3,000 people, who make their living hunting, fishing and breeding livestock. You visit the local cultural and historical museum and see typical Yakutian wooden huts. Overnight on board (BLD)

Day 6. Kyusyur

In the afternoon, you arrive in the small settlement Kyusyur. Most of the men here breed reindeer, and many women create clothing decorated with fur and beads. In this idyllic setting you enjoy a musical performance by local artists. Overnight on board (BLD)

Day 7. Tiksi

The appearance of ice floes on the river indicates that you are approaching the Arctic Ocean. In the morning, you learn about the customs and traditions of the northern peoples. Slowly, your ship enters the Neyelov Bay. In the afternoon, you take a bus to the port city Tiksi, the northernmost point on this cruise, where you visit an Arctic museum. Later you return to your ship and head back south. Overnight on board (BLD)

Day 8. Lena Delta

Today you pass through the more than 1,500 islands of the imposing Lena River Delta. The Lena is one of the biggest rivers in the world! You also see the vertical, rocky riverbanks of the so-called Lena Pipe, that reach as high as 400 meters, sometimes hanging over the water. Here the river narrows to a width of just two kilometers. In the afternoon, you enjoy a presentation about permafrost and a Russian language class. Overnight on board (BLD)

Day 9. Arctic Fishing Village

In the late afternoon, you arrive at the small settlement Natara. Here you learn about the simple life of Arctic fishermen and hunters. In the afternoon, you hear the legends and fairy tales of the northern peoples. Overnight on board (BLD)

Day 10. Return from the Arctic Circle

Today you leave the Arctic Circle, attend a Neptune festival in the afternoon, and try the Russian fish soup Ukha on the riverbank. Overnight on board (BLD)

Day 11. Forty Islands

After you leave behind the endless riverscape north of the Arctic Circle, you pass by the so-called Forty Islands, a natural border between Zhigansk and the mouth of the Vilyuy River. There are actually much more than 40 islands, and such a sight to behold! On board you enjoy Russian lessons and a presentation about Shamanism. Overnight on board (BLD)

Day 12. Yakutian Riverside Barbecue

In one of the most beautiful, unspoiled places along the Lena River, you take a break in the outdoors with a walk along the wild riverbank. In the evening, the symbolic Bonfire of Friendship is lit on the riverbank and songs are sung in various languages. A typical Yakutian barbecue! Overnight on board (BLD)

Day 13. Sottintsy

Around noon you reach Sottintsy and go an excursion to the Druzhba (Friendship) open-air ethnographic museum. In the evening, the captain invites you to a farewell cocktail. Overnight on board (BLD)

Day 14. Farewell, Yakutia!

Today it’s time to say goodbye to Yakutia. You transfer to the airport for your flight back home. (B)

The Lena, one of the largest rivers in Russia, flows through Yakutia in northeastern Siberia on its 4,265-kilometer-long way into the Arctic Ocean. After a brief detour to the Lena Pillars National Park from Yakutsk, sail downstream past unspoiled landscapes to the Lena Delta, the port of Tiksi and back.
