Beijing Pre-Tour

Day 1. Arrival in Beijing

You arrive in Beijing in the afternoon. After you settle into your centrally located high-end hotel, there is still enough time to get a first impression of this fascinating city. Overnight: Capital Hotel (or similar) (BD)

Day 2. Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven and Peking Duck

Start the day with an extensive guided tour of the legendary Forbidden City. Afterward, join a city tour for such sights as the magnificent Temple of Heaven. On your last night in Beijing, you enjoy a delicious speciality dinner in one of Beijing’s top Peking Duck restaurants. Overnight: Capital Hotel (or similar) (BD)

Day 3. Departure for Ulan Bator

You enjoy breakfast in the hotel and transfer to the train station to board your regular Chinese sleeper train for Ulan Bator. The journey from Beijing takes around 35 hours in total, and crosses the vast Gobi Desert. An experienced guide is on hand to assist, for example, with arranging meals on the train. Overnight on board (BLD)

Day 4/Day 1. Ulan Bator

Main Route

If you would like to start your journey in Mongolia, your first day is here in Ulan Bator, the national capital.

You arrive in the Mongolian capital city, Ulan Bator, and head to your centrally located mid-range hotel. On this first night in Ulan Bator, you have the chance to spend the night in a heated yurt—bookable in advance—amid majestic and unspoiled natural surroundings, a truly unique experience! In the afternoon, you visit the Mongolian National History Museum. If you choose to spend the night in the hotel, you have the opportunity to watch a Mongolian folklore performance, featuring throat singing, national costumes, dances, and the horsehead fiddle—the morin khuur—a symbol of the Mongolian nation. Tickets are €14/$15, to be paid on site. If you decide to spend the night in a heated yurt, you can enjoy Mongolian folk tales around the campfire. Overnight: Hotel Bayangol (or similar) (BLD)

Day 5/Day 2. Ulan Bator

On today’s sightseeing tour, you see the Gandan Monastery and the Choijin Lama Temple, a quirky architectural masterpiece. The temple architecture is unique worldwide for its dramatic depictions of the hellish torments that await those who stray from the path of righteousness. In the afternoon, you go on an excursion to visit a family of cattle breeders just outside the city. In the evening, you board your private train and settle in in your compartment. Overnight on board (BLD)

Day 6/Day 3. Ulan-Ude

The journey continues through the snow-covered Selenga Valley and the wild solitude of Eastern Siberia’s mountainous steppes. You take a tour of Ulan-Ude during an intermediate stop there. Formalities at the Russia–Mongolia border are painlessly carried out on board. Overnight on board (BLD)

Day 7/Day 4. Lake Baikal

Today is spent exploring the remarkable natural phenomenon Lake Baikal, the largest reservoir of freshwater in the world. Your train travels several hours directly alongside Lake Baikal, on the old track of the Trans-Siberian Railroad. You can take a walk on frozen Lake Baikal or enjoy a relaxing day on board. You also have the chance to visit the village Listvyanka, directly located at the shore of Lake Baikal. Overnight on board (BLD)

Day 8/Day 5. Irkutsk

Today your private train pulls into Irkutsk station. What could be more romantic than a horse-drawn sleigh ride—the next highlight of your program! In February, this is followed by an exhilarating dog sled ride through impressive winter scenery. Afterward, it is onward and upward by cable car (during business hours) to a special vantage point with stunning views out across Lake Baikal. This vantage point is also renowned for its cold temperatures—so this may be the place to experience the lowest temperatures you have ever known! Subsequently, a visit to a local family includes a tasty traditional Russian meal and a chance to visit a banya, a traditional Russian sauna. The final stop around the lake is the Baikal Museum, which showcases the area’s special ecosystem and the lake itself, the world’s largest fresh water reservoir. Overnight: Hotel Irkutsk (or similar) (BLD)

Day 9/Day 6. Irkutsk

During your city tour you see the Okhlopkov Drama Theatre, the new memorial to Tsar Alexander III, and the photogenic market hall. You also see picturesque Siberian wooden houses and visit one of the biggest monasteries in Eastern Siberia. Back on board in the evening, your train pulls out of Irkutsk station. Overnight on board (BLD)

Day 10/Day 7. Krasnoyarsk

You arrive in the morning in Krasnoyarsk—according to writer Anton Chekhov, the most beautiful city in Siberia. The brief city tour focuses on an overview of Krasnoyarsk’s captivating history. The mix of old and new streets vividly illustrates how the city has grown and changed over the years. You can enjoy a view of Peace Square, the city’s oldest square, and the stunning vistas across the Yenisei River. You also stop at the beautiful Paraskeva Pyatnitsa Chapel, the symbol of Krasnoyarsk. Overnight on board (BLD)

Day 11/Day 8. The Vastness of Siberia

Your train continues across Siberia. Relax and enjoy the magical winter views of snowy birch and larch forests in the sunshine! On board, you enjoy a vodka tasting with classic Russian snacks in the restaurant car, where you discover some of the lesser known Russian food and drink customs. Overnight on board (BLD)

Day 12/Day 9. Yekaterinburg

Today you stop in Yekaterinburg, the historical capital of the Urals. Yekaterinburg is known as the place where Tsar Nicolas II, the last tsar of Russia, was murdered with his family in 1918. A short city tour includes the attractive city center, restored in 2009, as well as the Church on Blood, built as a memorial in 2003 on the site of the tsar’s execution. Back on board, your train continues across the rolling steppes of western Siberia. Overnight on board (BLD)

Day 13/Day 10. Suzdal

After breakfast you go by bus to the impressive cities Vladimir and Suzdal, which are some of the most impressive cities in the Golden Ring. In the afternoon, you can admire the rolling steppes of the Russian hinterland. You cross impressive bridges over the Volga and Kama Rivers before beginning your ascent up the Ural Mountains—usually a magical snowy landscape at this time of year. You enjoy entertaining talks on board about the Cossacks and winter life in Siberia. You also have the opportunity to watch a film about Russia’s last tsar. Overnight on board (BLD)

Day 14/Day 11. The Red Square Illuminations

You arrive in Moscow and explore one of Europe’s most dynamic cities. On a panoramic sightseeing tour, you admire the architectural contrast between the city’s traditional onion-shaped domes and modern skyscrapers. Afterward you relax over lunch in a Russian history-themed restaurant. In the evening, you take a guided walk to discover the magic of Moscow’s legendary Red Square and enjoy its stunning illuminations. Overnight: Hotel Intercontinental Tverskaya (or similar). Meals included: Dinner (D)

Day 15/Day 12. Moscow

Morning in Moscow marks the end of your memorable journey, and the time has come to head home. We transfer you to the airport and bid you bon voyage. (B)

(B) = Breakfast, (L) = Lunch, (D) = Dinner
