Day 1. Welcome to the Amazon, Climb on Board!

On your first day, you receive a friendly welcome from the crew of the MS Jangada, your home for the next 13 days. Soon after your ships departs you witness the first marvelous natural phenomenon of your journey: the black waters of the Rio Negro and the white waters of the Amazon River flow side by side without mixing for miles. Later you enjoy a boat excursion on Limão Lake, where you set your eyes upon the stunning Victoria amazonica, a giant water lily named after Queen Victoria of England.
    Overnight: On board (D)

Day 2. Excursions by Day, Encounters by Night

In the early morning, you go on a boat excursion on the Purus River. Colorful parrots, herons, and ibises circle over the treetops as you try your hand at fishing for piranha and catfish, which you learn in a nearby fishing village. On the way to Codajás, everyday life in riverside stilt villages passes by. With a bit of luck, you might see the unique Amazon river dolphin, also known as the pink river dolphin. That evening you enjoy a nighttime boat excursion in the jungle, accompanied by the eerie sound of howler monkeys playing in the darkness. Be on the lookout for the glittering eyes of caimans lurking in the water. Overnight: On board (BLD)

Day 3. Meet the Amazing Açai Berry

Today you take a walk through the lively town of Codajás, a beautiful landscape where everything revolves around the cultivation of açai berries. Later you go on a boat excursion to an açai plantation during which you learn how these amazing berries are harvested from the tree tops and are then processed. On the same excursion you visit the picturesque village of Iracema. From there you go off search with local nature guides to catch a glimpse of otters and capybaras going about their routines. Overnight: On board (BLD)

Day 4. Capital of Brazil Nuts

During the night, your ship reaches Rio Japurá. In the morning, you go on an exciting jungle trek where you learn about the cultivation of the so-called Brazil Nut. On this excursion you also visit the Amazon city of Coari, where the Brazil Nut is also a point of focus. Later you enjoy a boat ride to the picturesque Coari Lake, which is formed by the confluence of the Coari, Urucu and Arauá rivers. Overnight: On board (BLD)

Day 5. In the Footsteps of Missionaries

The heart of Tefé, one of the largest cities on your journey through the Amazon, was founded by Portuguese missionaries in the 17th and 18th centuries. The panoramic view of the ancient river from up high in the monastery is simply breathtaking. And the monastery buildings themselves, which are still in use today, contain many historical artifacts. Later you continue on to the fascinating Mamirauá Nature Reserve, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the greatest highlights of your journey. Here you explore the rain forest on foot and by boat. Every year for about six months, the area is completely flooded, which fosters the growth of some very interesting and unique plant and wildlife. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch a glimpse of the scarlet-faced uakari monkey or a sloth watching you from the treetops. Cormorants, parrots and toucans are also among the spectacular creatures you might encounter in the foliage. Overnight: On board (BLD)

Day 6. On the Lagoon of the Caimans

In the early morning you go on a boat excursion that gives you the goosebumps. On the so-called Lagoon of the Caimans, not far from the Ucari Lodge, these large alligator-like reptiles glide silently past you. In the afternoon you leave the Mamirauá Nature Reserve and continue westward to Fonte Boa. Back on board, you enjoy the sights of everyday life on the river. Fishermen throw their nets; children in small canoes offer fruits and vegetables to passersby. Multicolored Amazon river boats filled with hammocks for lounging pass by while you listen to interesting talk on by your tour guides. Overnight: On board (BLD)

Day 7. The Fishing Village of Terra Nova

From Fonte Boa you reach the village of Terra Nova, whose citizens enjoy the plentiful amounts of the enormous and tasty Pirarucu fish. Some Pirarucu can weigh up to 330 pounds/150 kilos and are exported from here to all of Latin America. You can have a taste of it for yourself at lunch with the locals. Today you also discover how Cassava flour is produced and learn about sustainable timber. After your visit you return to your ship in Fonte Boa and reach Jutai by morning. Overnight: On board (BLD)

Day 8. Jutai, Deep in the Jungle

In the morning you go on a boat expedition on a branch of the Amazon near Jutai. Later you relax on the sun deck of your ship and enjoy its friendly service. The MS Jangada takes you through one of the least populated reaches of the Amazon. Wild jungle surrounds you left and right. Occasionally you see the dorsal fins of spectacular Amazon river dolphins. On board your tour guide gives a presentation that introduces you to the world of the Ticuna, the largest tribe in the Brazilian Amazon. That evening you take a walk through the remote village of Santo Antônio do Içá, which can only be reached by river. Overnight: On board (BLD)

Day 9. Bethania, A Day with the Ticuna

Today you navigate through the picturesque river branches via boat to the village of Bethania. You experience the ritual initiation dance of the Moça Nova in a traditional hut. Handcrafted masks and black robes, imaginatively decked out in feathers and shells, bring you into the world of the Ticuna. After lunch in the lush, green nature of the Rio Iça, you return to your ship and the adventure continues. Next stop: Sao Paulo de Olivença. Overnight: On board (BLD)

Day 10. Superfoods of the Amazon, Ticuna Village

In the morning you have another opportunity to go fishing for piranha. You also visit Sao Paulo de Olivença’s colorful market. Peach palms, açai, camu camu—if you haven’t tasted these so-called superfruits, now is your time to try them! In the Ticuna village Vendaval you get to know the everyday life of the locals and discover their artisanal handicrafts. By the time the Amazon sunset shimmers red and violet, your cruise ship sets off on the last exciting leg of your adventure. Overnight: On board (BLD)

Day 11. Amazon Borderland, Maguta Ethnology Museum

Today you reach Brazil’s border with Colombia and Peru. You visit the Maguta Ethnology Museum and marvel at the masks, costumes, clay pots and paintings of the Ticuna people. Only a few kilometers away you get a real visual treat: the Peruvian village of Islandia—elevated entirely above the water on 33-foot/10-meter pilings. In the afternoon you discover the unique flora and fauna of the area before a shaman from the Matis tribe welcomes you to the village. This tribe had its first contact with the Western world less than 100 years ago. They revere the jaguar and adorn themselves with remarkable face tattoos and piercings. Overnight: On board (BLD)

Day 12. In Search of the Jaguar Men, Tabatinga

Equipped with blowguns and the infamous curare poison, you go hunting with the Matis. You learn how to move silently through the jungle, watching monkeys and birds, discovering medicinal plants. A short trip on the MS Jangada brings you to Tabatinga. In the late afternoon you discover Tabatinga’s Colombian sister city, Leticia. The capital of the Colombian Amazon is lively and is home to an exciting ethnology museum. As the sun sets you visit a beautifully cared for public park and have the chance to see thousands of parrots returning to their treetop dormitories, a truly unforgettable sight to see. Overnight: On board (BLD)

    Day 13. Adeus Rio Amazonas!

After breakfast, you say goodbye to your wonderful ship and its lovely crew. You have just completed an incomparable journey into the unknown reaches of the Amazon—an adventure you’ll take with you for all your days.
